SoHo is bounded by Houston, Lafayette, Canal and Varick. The name stands for South of Houston (it has nothing to do with Soho in London). SoHo was the cat’s meow in the 1800s. Farmland gave way to mansions, hotels, theaters and upscale stores, especially along Broadway. The streets were lined with cobblestones and lit by gas lamps. There was a seamy underbelly though - SoHo was NYC’s first red-light district. As residential development moved uptown in the late 1800’s, SoHo became an industrial center, mostly for garment production. Many of the structures were built with cast iron facades, and the area was designated the Cast Iron district. As production moved elsewhere, artists flocked to the big, cheap factory and warehouse spaces, which they used as lofts for both living and working (illegally). The artists were trendsetters, which attracted tourists and commerce, and ultimately drove up rents and sent the artists packing. While many national chains have opened shop in SoHo, it’s still home to many art galleries and trendy boutiques, and is an ideal place to spend a sunny weekend afternoon.
