Williamsburg is bordered by Greenpoint, Bed-Stuy and Bushwick. In the 1800’s it was home to shipbuilders, breweries, banks, shipping docks and factories. Noteworthy inhabitants included Cornelius Vanderbilt, Charles Pratt (of the Pratt Institute), and Charles Pfizer. At one point it accounted for 10% of the wealth of the US. When the Williamsburg Bridge opened in 1903 immigrants migrated over from the Lower East Side and the population skyrocketed. The economy took a turn for the worse after WWII and gave rise to crime and poverty. In the 1970s artists began to take advantage of the low rents and large spaces. This trend continued over the following decades, and today Williamsburg is a center of design, art, music and other creative fields. It’s becoming more and more gentrified, with lots of new real estate developments and rising prices.
