The East Village has broke off from the immigrant-laded Lower East Side, and became a haven for hippies in the 60s. Then it became an incubator for musicians. Now its considered a younger, less expensive, edgier sibling to the more gentrified West Village.

The East Village is bounded by 14th Street, the East River, Houston Street and Broadway. It was a bit of a red-headed stepchild for many years, first considered part of the immigrant-laden Lower East Side, and then part of the beatnik Greenwich Village. The East Village came into its own in the 1960s, when it became a hippie-haven, with head shops, anti-war demonstrations, alternative newspapers – and rock and roll. Many musicians lived or got their starts in the East Village, including Charlie Parker, Iggy Pop, Blondie, the Ramones, the Beastie Boys, The Strokes and the Talking Heads, and it was until recently home to CBGB, the birthplace of punk. It has also been a center for art, with early exhibits by Jeff Koons and Keith Haring. Landmarks include Tompkins Square Park, built in 1834 and home to labor demonstrations, pot smoke-ins, anti-war protests, free concerts by Jimi Hendrix and Santana – and an old elm tree demarking the birthplace of the Hare Krishna religion in the Western Hemisphere. The East Village is now a younger, less expensive, edgier sibling to the more gentrified West Village.
