Chelsea started as a shipping and industrial area. The Nabisco bakery produced the first Oreo cookie in the late 1800s (the company has made over 400 billion since then). Later, Chelsea was New York's main theater district. Then it became a center for art -- it's now home to over 200 galleries.

Chelsea runs from 15th Street to 39th Street, West of 5th Avenue. It was a rural area until the railroads moved in during the mid 19th century, and it became a shipping center. In 1898 Nabisco, opened a bakery on 9th Avenue between 15th & 16th Streets, where it produced the first Oreo (they’ve sold over 400 billion Oreos since then; that’s a lot of carbs!). At that time, Chelsea was New York’s main theater district. Later in the century it became a Mecca for art, and its now home to over 200 galleries. Chelsea is also known for its large gay population. Landmarks include Chelsea Piers, a sports and recreation complex along the Hudson, and the Chelsea Hotel, where poet Dylan Thomas died after his shenanigans at the White Horse Tavern.
