The Meatpacking District runs from West 15th Street to Gansevoort Street, between Hudson Street and the Hudson River. Until recently it was known as Gansevoort Market For you history buffs, Peter Gansevoort was a Revolutionary War hero, a descendent of Dutch aristocracy, and grandfather of Herman Melville. Anyway, as you’d expect from the name, the Meatpacking District was home to most of the slaughterhouses in NYC. While there are still a bunch of wholesale meat companies around, most of the butchers have been replaced by partygoers and shoppers. Landmarks include the 75+ year old elevated train tracks the cows rode to meet their maker, which is becoming a 1.5 mile park known as The Highline. Over the past few years, restaurants, and shops in the Meatpacking District have opened at an astounding pace.
