The Upper West Side (“UWS”) is North of 59th Street, West of Central Park. It was originally called the Bloomingdale District. Development lagged many other areas of NYC until the 20th Century. Construction of The Dakota was completed in 1884. At the time the area (Central Park West & 72nd Street) was so remote that they named the building after the Dakota Territory out West. Famous inhabitants of the Dakota have included John Lennon, Lauren Bacall, Rudolf Nureyev, Bono, Judy Garland, and Paul Simon. In the mid to late 60’s, gentrification pushed upwards with the construction of Lincoln Center. The UWS has a stereotype of being a center for Jewish liberal intellectuals, famously captured in Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall”. Fans of Seinfeld will recognize Tom’s Restaurant at West 112th Street & Broadway as “Monk’s Café”. Other notable landmarks include the Time Warner Center, the American Museum of Natural History, and Zabar’s.
