Fred's at Barney's
Shopping the Upper East Side is rigorous. Refuel at Fred's, on the 9th floor of Barney's.
Guide: Stylist (Robbie)
Location: UES
Strengths
- Barney's is arguably at the epicenter of NYC shopping, so you can't beat the convenience of a good lunch spot right in the store.
- Fred's has a hipper scene than its counterpart at Bergdorf's, which tends to draw an older crowd.
- Named for Fred Pressman, son of founder Barney Pressman. Fred took over from his dad, the cut-rate clothing king, and transformed Barney's from a second-hand suit store to an upscale fashion mecca.
Shortcomings
- It's no great bargain.
- It's a madhouse on weekends for lunch so be prepared for the crush, or try going for dinner or during off-hours.
Insider tips
- Try the market salad or the lobster club.
Anecdotes
- I'd come here for the people watching alone. It's always buzzing, and if you're pooped from shopping, just sit back and watch the ladies who lunch.
Credentials
- Zagat gives them a 20 for food.
