Cafe Lalo
A charming cafe for a date, or to rest after an UWS shopping spree.
Guide: Actress (Jordan)
Location: Upper West Side
Strengths
- Whether you need a cute brunch spot for out-of-town visitors, a charming date place, or a café to rest your legs after an UWS shopping spree, Café Lalo is the perfect destination. Their never-ending choice of desserts and cappuccinos/espressos/coffee drinks are the draw for most folks, but they actually also have a delicious brunch and lunch menu, not to mention an alcohol license! The décor is quaint Euro, with floor-to-ceiling French windows, cozy bar tables and stools, and European artwork throughout. And in case you don’t know, it’s that adorable café in the flic, “You’ve Got Mail” when Meg Ryan thinks she’s getting stood up by her date and Tom Hanks just happens to show up.
Shortcomings
- Tight quarters
- It can get quite loud, though they tone it down with jazz and classical music
Insider tips
- Their deserts are so good - it's nearly impossible to choose one. They have over 100 types of cakes alone. Their hot chocolate is great, too.
Anecdotes
- I’ve spent hours just hanging out there with a book, coffee and dessert. It’s a fun people-watching locale and a lovely atmosphere during the day when it’s not crowded. But I’ve also had some really fun nights there. Once on a date, and a few times when I’m craving sugar and NEED my Lalo (a few too many times, actually).
