Jack's Luxury Oyster Bar
Another seafood-oriented Jewel from Jack & Grace Lamb.
Guide: Entrepreneur (Jack)
Location: East Village
Strengths
- This is my kind of place (and not just coz it’s called “Jack’s”). It’s informal, casual, small, unpretentious, and nearly every item on the inventive seafood menu is to die for.
- It’s owned by Jack and Grace Lamb, owners of Jewel Bako, another favorite. They originally ran it from a two-story location across the street from Jewel Bako, but moved it around the corner to its current location, which has a much better layout.
- The service is outstanding, as is the attention to detail.
Shortcomings
- The bar seating is a bit cramped, and they could use a bit more natural light.
Insider tips
- Take a date here, but first make sure they are a seafood lover, and that they are willing to experiment (if not, don’t date them anyway).
Anecdotes
- I started with a bottle of Bollinger champagne and the caviar set, then worked my way through Oyster’s Six Ways, Tuna Paillard, and Butter Poached Lobster. One dish was better than the next. I’d order every single thing again.
Credentials
- Zagat gives them a 24 for food. Right on.
